Second Story Addition in Fort Worth, TX
The Project
The Echo Trail home was a classic Tanglewood mid-century ranch — wide, low-slung, and architecturally intentional in a way that most ranch-style additions ignore. The homeowners needed more space but were adamant that the addition not look like a warehouse had been dropped on top of their home.
The structural engineering alone was a significant undertaking: mid-century ranches weren't built to carry a second floor, so the foundation and bearing walls required reinforcement before framing could begin. We brought in a structural engineer on day one and worked through every load path before touching a wall.
The second story added three bedrooms, two full baths, and a loft that overlooks the main living area below. The exterior was designed with the same horizontal emphasis as the original structure — shallow rooflines, matching cedar details, and a facade that reads as a cohesive whole from the street.
